Cell-based therapies @ Sobajima Clinic

“Sobajima Clinic is committed to harnessing the power of advanced medical technology to pursue the health and wellbeing of our patients. We strive to improve the quality of life for our patients through cutting-edge regenerative medicine. Our dedicated efforts are focused on your health and happiness, and we eagerly look forward to welcoming you to our clinic.”

Regenerative Medicine(stem cell therapy)

Sobajima Clinic, located in Higashi-Osaka, Osaka Prefecture, Japan, focuses on regenerative medicine, particularly treatments using adipose-derived stem cells for orthopedic diseases. It offers various cell-based therapies including fresh stem cells treatments, cultured stem cells treatments, and a cell bank service. The clinic emphasizes evidence-based medicine, in-house cell production for quality and safety, and specialized risk management. They aim to improve patients’ quality of life using advanced medical techniques. Contact details, clinic introduction, and information about the clinic director, Satoshi Sobajima, are also provided.

What are Fresh stem cells and Cultured stem cells?

We committed to providing the best possible treatment to our patients by continually pursuing advanced medical technologies. As part of this, we offer stem cell therapy using not only cultured cells but also fresh stem cells (SVF & MFAT). Fresh stem cells, which are freshly harvested cells, are believed to maximize the function of adipose stem cells. These cells are used immediately in treatments without freezing, maintaining their vitality. Our clinic is one of the few that handles both fresh and cultured stem cell treatment, which is a significant feature of our services. We invite you to experience our safe and effective regenerative medicine.

Fresh stem cell therapy

SVF (Stromal Vascular Fraction) refers to a group of cells found in the interstitial spaces between fat cells in adipose tissue. SVF includes a variety of cells, including adipose stem cells, which play a crucial role in tissue repair and regeneration.

MFAT (Micro-Fragmented Adipose Tissue) involves processing harvested adipose tissue through filtration and washing, removing unwanted blood and oil components, and extracting tissue fragments that contain cells. MFAT, which includes cells that can reduce inflammation and repair damaged tissue, is extracted in a manner that closely resembles its natural state in the body.

Cultured stem cells therapy

Cultured stem cell therapy involves extracting stem cells from the body and proliferating them in a specific environment to obtain a sufficient number of cells. These cells, known for their tissue repair and regeneration capabilities, can have their usefulness maximized through culturing. One advantage of using cultured stem cells is the ability to generate a large number of cells from a small amount of body tissue, making treatment feasible and safer for those at high risk for general anesthesia or those averse to it. Additionally, cultured stem cells can be administered multiple times, making them suitable for conditions requiring continuous treatment. At Sobajima Clinic, high-quality and safe cultivation of stem cells is conducted in their in-house Cell Processing Center (CPC). This allows for the production of safe and high-quality cells without relying on external facilities. Cultured stem cells are also used in the treatment of osteoarthritis, where they are expected to alleviate joint inflammation and pain, and potentially promote cartilage regeneration.

Treatment Process

  • Liposuction
We aspirate the patient’s own subcutaneous fat (usually from the buttocks and thighs) in a short time. (The amount of fat to be harvested is about 100cc for fresh stem cell Tx and about 10-20cc for cultured stem cell Tx) Anesthesia is typically local anesthesia, used to safely and efficiently harvest fat.
  • Fresh stem cells
The fat aspirated is separated to obtain fresh stem cells. While performing sterilization operations, a group of fresh stem cells (SVF, MFAT) is isolated and purified.
    Cultured stem cells
Fat stem cells are isolated from the aspirated fat. The separation is performed by specialized technicians in a fully enclosed, clean environment. Afterwards, the cells are cultured in a certified clean room within our clinic’s Cell Therapy Unit (CTU) or related facilities, ensuring a sufficient quantity of cells. The cells are stored at ultra-low temperatures (below minus 150 degrees Celsius) until the day of administration.
  • Transplantation
The cell transplantation is performed on the day of the liposuction.
    Transplantation
The cell transplantation takes place approximately 4 weeks after the liposuction.
  • Cryopreservation
The stem cells are divided into several portions and cryogenically stored. By dividing them into several portions, it becomes possible to undergo regenerative medicine treatments multiple times in the future.
